#Dominica, July 27, 2023 – An abuse of a travel privilege has led to a significant change for Dominica; the Caribbean island now joins the group of regional countries including Haiti, Jamaica and the Dominican Republic where it is required that one have a British Visa in order to travel to and transit the United Kingdom.

A visa restriction was imposed on the country.

The announcement was made on Wednesday July 19th by Suella Braverman, UK Home Secretary, in a statement to the House of Commons.

She said, “Careful consideration of Dominica’s and Vanuatu’s operation of a citizenship by investment scheme has shown clear and evident abuse of the scheme, including the granting of citizenship to individuals known to pose a risk to the UK.”

Braverman continued to express that the decisions to impose the visa requirements are serious and are not indicative of poor relations between the UK and the countries. She also points out the reason for the new visa rule.

“The decision to impose these visa requirements has been taken solely for migration and border security reasons and is not a sign of poor relations with these countries. Any decision to change a visa regime is not taken lightly and we keep our border and immigration system under regular review to ensure it continues to work in the UK national interest.”

Despite the changes, Braverman revealed that an exception is being made for nationals of the countries newly subjugated to the visa requirements, to travel to the UK visa free no later than August 16th, 2023, that is if they have confirmed bookings.

Additionally, plans are in place for these nationals to apply for Visas.

The new law was also imposed on Honduras, Namibia, Timor-Leste and Vanuatu.
